Svar Life Science is a biotech company with high focus on the complement system, developing assays and solutions for research, drug development, and diagnostic use. As a company invested and dedicated to the complement pathway, Svar would like to support the science that will increase our collective understanding of how this system works and how it can be used and targeted to create new therapies in the future. As a part of their intention to give back to the community that they offer our solutions and services to, Svar have established an annual award, the Svar Complement Excellence Award.

The origins of this award date back more than 2 decades, when in 2001 a consortium of complementologists set out to create a “whole” complement assay funded by a European grant and in collaboration with the industrial partner Wieslab, which later became Eurodiagnostica and then SVAR. Part of the revenues from these assays are now used to sponsor the Svar Compelement Excellence Award.

The committee deciding on the recipients of the award will consist of a mix of academic and pharma representatives, both parts having a solid footing within the world of the complement system. This is a great opportunity for academics and the pharma scientists to work together, as both have a vested interest in the development and furthering of the complement field. For 2023, the committee will consist of 2 members each from ICS and ECN, as well as last year’s recipients of the award, and a pharma representative, and the awardees will be announced during the ICS meeting in Newcastle.

As part of the Svar Excellence Award, two recipients will receive €20.000 each. The awards are intended as grants and are to be used to support the projects the recipients are working on within the complement field. Svar also values the team effort in the research, and dedicates therefore 10% of the award, meaning €2.000, to be used for a social activity for the entire group, subject to local guidelines and regulations.
